Yesterday, the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled that the EU may impose tariffs on US imports of up to $4 billion in connection with the WTO Boeing dispute. Escalating tariffs have caused American Whiskey exports to the EU to drop by 41% and US imports of Scotch Whisky to drop by nearly 34% between October 2019 and August 2020.
In response, The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) released a statement urging the US and the EU to, “come back to the negotiating table and agree to the immediate and simultaneous removal of tariffs on US and EU distilled spirits with a commitment not to impose any additional tariffs on other distilled spirits.”
