Total off-premise wine sales in the US surged 30% this March compared to last year, according to retail data from Nielsen and winery direct-to-consumer data from Wine Vine Analytics and Sovos ShipCompliant. Sales for wines priced $11 to $14.99 rose by more than 40%, the biggest increase in any price range for both direct-to-consumer and retail data.
Wines priced $50-100 saw a stark difference in both channels, totaling $138 million in direct-to-consumer shipments and just $25 million at the retail level. California was the leader in both origin and destination for retail and direct-to-consumer sales, with winery shipments totaling over $341 million and retail sales exceeding $1.2 billion.
