The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau (TTB) has updated its policy on gluten-free labeling to fall in line with a recent update from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Previously, only spirits made from ingredients that did not contain gluten, such as grapes, corn or potatoes, could be labeled gluten free, but the new ruling will allow spirits made from gluten-containing grains to be included as well.
However, the TTB warned that anyone who makes such claims should be prepared to verify the information when requested and there is the possibility of sample testing. Any violation of these revisions will be subject to case by case investigation.
