Scottish single-malt scotch has been known to incorporate the decaying vegetation of Peat wetlands in the distillation process, which displays smoky, briny, woody, or floral flavors. This element unique to scotch has now made its way to American whiskey, gin, rum, and surprisingly vodka. Peat-smoked spirits enhance the sophistication and complexity of the drink. Other areas of Eastern Europe and America’s Pacific Northwest are anticipated to experiment with peat-smoked characteristics to enhance the flavors, aromas, and sophistication of the product.
