In South Dakota vs Wayfair Inc., the Supreme Court ruled online wine sales to be taxed. In the past, some online retailers charged taxes on out-of-state purchases but many opted not to do so. Since June, the ruling will revamp and standardize wine retail market taxes throughout the United States.
Large e-commerce platforms for wine sales such as Amazon.com and Wine.com have been charging taxes on out-of-state customers all along, although Amazon.com did not charge in areas it did not have a brick-and-mortar presence up until 6 months ago.
The imposed e-commerce taxes will be charged in the state of purchase instead of the state of delivery.
