The History of Tennessee’s Eagle Distributing

Eastern Tennessee met with Budweiser beer in the 1880s, and before Prohibition (see the history of the alcoholic beverage industry), it was delivered by food and pharmaceutical delivery companies. After the Prohibition, the laws changed, and several distributors got the rights to distribute Anheuser-Busch products.

In 1946, Smokey Mountain Beverage, owned by Charles Brown, got the distributing rights to Budweiser and other products. He later sold the company to E.L. Tipton, who renamed the company Tipton Distributing Company, and built a new warehouse facility. His family owned the company until 1983, when they sold it to Ray Hand, who renamed it the Eagle Distributing Company, Inc.

Ray Hand is the owner and president of Eagle Distributing Company; he started the distributing business at a young age. His father owned a distributing company in Clarksville, Tennessee, and Ray and his brother Charles were a part of the company.

While he finished his education and went into the uniform and linen business, he soon realized that his passion was in beer distribution. He moved to Lexington, Kentucky, and became a partner in a Stroh/Schlitz operation, and the company expanded to another location in Asheville, North Carolina.

In 1983, Ray Hand divested his interests in the Stroh/Schlitz in Asheville and Lexington and focused on purchasing a Tennessee distributor Tipton Distributing Company, that became Eagle Distributing Co., Inc. The company is still a family business, and Ray Hand is the owner and president.

They serve several counties across Tennessee from two major hubs, Knoxville and Memphis. From these two locations, they serve a wide area of Tennessee, including Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Hancock, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, Shelby, and Union.

The company has kept the family values it was founded upon, and they have an excellent dedication to the communities they serve.
