Hard seltzer is alcohol’s hottest trend this summer. Its convenient packaging and light taste have made it easy to market. Hard seltzer is made from malted barley or fermented sugar, is about 100 calories or less and around 5 percent alcohol. Many consumers are opting for hard seltzer as it is a transportable cocktail alternative that is much lower in calories than beer. The alcoholic seltzer market makes up a 2 percent share of the beer market and is growing rapidly. According to Nielsen data, companies such as Bon & Viv, White Claw, and Truly had nearly $488 million in sales in the past year and achieved a 193 percent year-over-year sales growth in April of this year.
