In a significant update to beverage alcohol regulations, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) has announced a final rule adding new size allowances for both wine and distilled spirits containers. This change, effective January 10, 2025, marks a major shift toward increased flexibility for industry members and broader choices for consumers.
The new rule adds 13 wine container sizes, ranging from compact 180ml options to larger format 2.25L bottles. For wine, the newly approved sizes include:
- 180ml, 300ml, 330ml, and 360ml for smaller servings
- 16 oz and 19.2 oz aligning with common beer sizes
- 550ml, 600ml, 620ml, 700ml, and 720ml offering mid-range options
- 1.8L and 2.25L for larger format offerings
The spirits industry receives even more flexibility with 15 new container sizes, including:
- 187ml, 250ml, 331ml, 350ml, and 355ml for smaller formats
- 475ml, 500ml, 570ml, 700ml, 710ml, and 945ml for medium sizes
- 1.5L, 2L, 3L, and 3.75L for large format options
Notably, the TTB has also eliminated the distinction between standards of fill for canned spirits versus other containers, streamlining regulations across packaging types. This comprehensive update reflects the industry’s evolving needs and consumer preferences in the modern beverage alcohol market.
Existing Standards of Fill
Currently, authorized wine container sizes range from 50ml to 3L, with options for even-liter sizes above 4L. Key existing sizes include the standard 750ml bottle, the popular 1.5L magnum format, and smaller 375ml half bottles. The complete range offers 25 different size options, providing significant flexibility for wine packaging.
For spirits, the current standards span from 50ml mini bottles to 3.75L large formats. Notable existing sizes include the traditional 750ml bottle, 1.75L handle size, and 375ml pints. The existing framework also encompasses 25 approved sizes, now expanded further with the new additions.
