As the country adjusts to the COVID-19 lockdown, 66% of consumers reported ordering take-out or delivery within the last two weeks and 15% of consumers purchased alcohol with their order, according to Nielsen CGA data collected from NY, California, Illinois and Florida.
Take-out orders grew 110% in the week ending on March 28 compared to the average week. Consumers claimed the top factor in buying alcoholic beverages with take-out and delivery was ease and safety, as 58% did so to avoid a trip to the grocery store or liquor store.
Below are additional key findings from the week:
- 50% of consumers reported drinking the same amount of alcohol as usual. 22% reported drinking more.
- 15% of consumers are buying drinks from the grocery store to enjoy along with their take-out.
- Consumers most frequently purchased products which are easy to transport and order, such as wine or imported/craft beer.
- 61% of consumers expect to pay more for alcoholic drinks when ordering take out or delivery than they would in a grocery store, and 57% said they would expect to pay more than when in a restaurant or bar.
